We'd spent the afternoon exploring rock pools at Barricane Beach, a gorgeous little bay in North Devon, tucked in between Woolacombe Bay and Morte Point.
On this particular afternoon in August, as well as the regular beach-goers, the bay was filled with a merry party of wedding guests, shortly followed by the bride and groom.
We had ordered a curry from Barricane Beach Cafe. It was quite a surreal experience - sitting with sand in between our toes, eating a plate of curry and watching a wedding reception we hadn't been invited to!
Before we headed home took a stroll around to Woolacombe. The light that evening was superb - shafts of sunlight were streaming down onto the Atlantic which was the most beautiful greeny-blue. The clouds were thick and the evening was warm. Everything felt peaceful and lazy.
The tide was high, and the view of Woolacombe over the glorious summer foliage was the image I took away in my mind. I knew I had to paint it!
'High Tide in August' was created using oil paints, a palette knife and a fan brush. Finer details such as the doors of the Woolacombe beach huts were painted with a size zero brush and lots of patience!
As with many of my paintings, I started with layers of really vibrant colours. In the distance these are painted over to give the hazy and dramatic atmosphere. On closer inspection there are pinks in the sky and purples in the sea. The foliage in the foreground is a rainbow of colour jumping out from a dark undergrowth.
I used thick and generous dollops of oil paint to create the leaves, particularly for the striking red/orange plant right at the front of the painting. There is great texture and depth to this piece and I really hope you like it.
Does it remind you of any late afternoons spent by the sea?
